Master Of The Universe (6:04) Notes: ====== Nik plays an "In The Mood" solo in Social Alliance "Banana Attack" at 4:06 in Sonic Attack The flip in Steppenwolf runs right to the end of the tape, and there may be more than a few seconds missing (ie if the tape flip wasn't noticed for a while). The second flip, between Sonic Attack and Urban Guerilla was made at a safe point in the music, and probably only 5 seconds is lost. The gap between the band leaving the stage, and returning for the encore is cut. The fade out at the end of disc #1 duplicates the first few seconds of d2t02, and the fade-in at the start of d2 duplicates the last few seconds of d1t11. To rejoin (ie using the .shn files), simply omit d1t12 & d2t01. Note that when listening in MONO, some phasing will be noticed (trebly sounds become alternately dull and brighter, over a cycle of a few seconds). This is an artifact inherent to the original cassette recording, and the cycles coincide with the motion of one of the cassette hubs - i.e. it is a flaw introduced either by the mechanics of the cassette deck (which is unknown) - or the TDK cassettes, possibly due to faulty tape tension. There are cassette decks available that can correct this azimuth error on playback, but I don't know anyone with such a deck and I don't know how effective such a mechanism could be with a continuously variable azimuth as with these source cassettes. It is in any case not apparant in normal STEREO listening. Flaws: ====== d1t01 - 00:14 : Click d1t06 - 0:22 : Scratchy clicks d1t06 - 0:23 : Scratchy clicks d1t06 - 0:41 : Scratchy clicks d1t06 - 2:48 : Scratchy clicks in Left channel d1t07 - 0:00-0:20 : More clicks/static d1t07 - 0:31 : More clicks/static t1t08 - 4:01-4:02 : Click removed - but other quiet click(s?) remain in this vicinity d1t09 - 4:13 : The tape-flip in Steppenwolf is reduced to a fraction of a second - in reality a longer section of music is missing. d1t09 - 10:14 : Crackle/static d1t09 - 10:16 : Crackle/static d1t10 - 0:17-0:18 Crackle/static, also other spots leading into Psychedelic Warlords d2t02 - 00:06 : Static d2t05 - 2:03-2:06 : Static in left channel - also 2:10 (left) & 2:30 (right) & 3:44-3:46 (right) & 4:00 (right) d2t06 - 6:57 : 2nd tape flip (between Sonic Attack and Urban Guerilla) d2t07 - 2:03 : Static t2t08 - 5:47-6:00 : Various static/clicks d2t09 - 0:14-0:35 : Various static/clicks d2t09 - 9:53 : The rather nasty click here is analogue - probably a guitar being unplugged. Also 10:00 d2t09 / d2t10 boundary : Tape pause prior to encore d2t10 - 0:44-1:24 : Some static/clicks during Ground Control To Pilot playback d2t13 - 0:45-0:50 : Static d2t13 - 1:12-1:23 : Static d2t13 - 2:53-2:55 : Static d2t13 - 3:01-3:25 : Static d2t13 - 4:49-4:52 : More onstage static d2t13 - (Masters Of The Universe - basically equipment noise during all the "quiet" parts) Editing: ======== The raw audio was converted to 32-bits, and the following adjustments were made in CEP. (All measurements in minutes:seconds:frames). Entire show bass-enhanced +6db between 50 and 100Hz in CEP 30-band filter (+3db at 25 & 125Hz, flat outside). The source cassette is a touch bass-lite, probably in part due to the TDK AD cassette. From the original cassette side #1, (timings with 3 seconds + 13 frames silence preceding first burst of music): 00:05:25 : Click removed from Left channel 00:15:11 : Click removed from both channels 34:02:51 : Click removed 34:02:52 : Click removed 34:02:71 : Click removed 34:06:73 : Click removed 34:33:66 : Clicks in synth/drum beat removed 37:39:40 : Click removed 37:40:15 : Click removed 38:00:57 : Click removed - other quiet click(s?) remain in this vicinity 46:04:68 : (very nasty) Click removed From the original cassette side #2 (timings with 1 second + 50 frames silence preceding first burst of music): From the original cassette side #3 (timings with 1 second + 6 frames silence preceding first burst of music): 08:56:57 : Click removed from right channel 08:56:58 : Click removed 10:24 - 10:25 - 2 thumps in right channel - reduced by declicking. (probably originating from onstage equipment, but at enormous volume and detrimental to normalisation and loud playback). 12:50:42 : Click removed 18:47:04 : Click removed 24:23:22 : Tape pause prior to encore 27:15 : 2 thumps in right hand channel - probably genuine equipment or microphone noises. A bit ugly when played loud, so I reduced these with a bass filter and click removal. 30:14:70 : Click removed 32:10:13 : Click removed 34:03:22 : Click removed 34:06:58 : Click removed 34:57:15 : Click removed Resulting .wav files were normalised by increasing left channel by 4.5db, and right by 4db, then converted 16-bit and joined. Then CDWAV for track splitting, and creation (using CDWAV & CEP) of the d1 fade-out and d2 lead-in tracks. alimac@netcomuk.co.uk
